Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) wurde von ihrem Vater, König Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine), zur rechtmäßigen Thronfolgerin ernannt. Auf seinem Sterbebett kommt es allerdings zu einem Missverständnis zwischen ihm und seiner zweiten Ehefrau Alicent Hohenturm (Olivia Cooke). Sie glaubt, dass er seine Meinung geändert und ihren gemeinsamen Sohn Aegon II. (Tom Glynn-Carney) als Nachfolger auf dem Eisernen Thron bestimmt hat. Nach Viserys Tod lässt Alicent deshalb eigenmächtig Aegon als neuen König von Westeros krönen. Als Rhaenyra erfährt, dass ihre ehemals beste Freundin sie um den Thron betrogen hat, ist sie außer sich vor Wut. Beide Seiten versuchen daraufhin, so viele Verbündete wie möglich für sich zu gewinnen. Dabei kommt es zu einem tragischen Zwischenfall und Rhaenyras Sohn Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) wird von Aemond Targaryens (Ewan Mitchell) Drachen getötet. Rhaenyra schwört Rache und rüstet sich für einen Bürgerkrieg.
Rhaenyra und ihr Ehemann Daemon (Matt Smith) wohnen zusammen mit ihren Kindern und ihren Ratsmitgliedern auf Burg Drachenstein. Das Banner von Haus Targaryen zeigt einen roten Drachen auf schwarzem Untergrund, weshalb Rhaenyra und ihre Anhänger auch als Team Schwarz bezeichnet werden. Sie verfügen über insgesamt sieben Drachen und haben einige mächtige Häuser von Westeros als Verbündete. Unter anderem das Haus Velaryon mit Corlys (Steve Toussaint) als Oberhaupt. Er ist ein berühmt-berüchtigter Seefahrer und besitzt die größte Schiffsflotte von Westeros. Diese steht nun auch Rhaenyra zur Verfügung. Zudem kontrolliert Team Schwarz die Meerenge zwischen Westeros und Essos sowie der Schwarzwasserbucht, die den Seeweg nach Königsmund ermöglicht. Rhaenyra und ihr Team Schwarz zieht daher mit wertvollen Ressourcen in den bevorstehenden Krieg der Targaryens – dem sogenannte "Tanz der Drachen".
